The story map below depicts the Pennsylvania Anthracite Coal Fields and the position of the collieries in 1899.  The locations mentioned in the oral histories are featured. In each description, there may be a link to additional information about the topic or location.

There were 362 collieries in operation in 1899. According to the the article "Who Are These Anthracite People? Pennsylvania Anthracite Heritage Museum" by Valerie A. Zehl,  between 1850 and 1920, the population of the region jumped from one hundred and fifty thousand to over one million people due to the influx of immigrant workers.
